A$AP Rocky is an American rapper, producer, actor, and street fashion icon. Born Rakim Athelaston Mayers in New York City's Harlem neighborhood, A$AP Rocky is one of the most influential artists of his generation, fusing New York street rap, psychedelic electronica, and high fashion into a unique style.

Rakim began rapping at age eight, after his older brother died and his family moved. As a teenager, he was homeless and lived in shelters in Harlem. Music became his outlet: inspired by Southern rap, DJ Screw's screw tapes, and Southern trap, A$AP developed his own sound — atmospheric, multilayered, and instantly recognizable.
